Chiapas, Mexico is the newest addition to the HCI family of countries served. Welcomed by directors of the Hospital Regional de Altas Especialidades Pediatricas de Tuxtla Gutierrez and Hospital Materno Infantil de Comitan, HCI has launched a 5 year partnership to develop a full scale pediatric cardiovascular program which will save hundreds of children from the Chiapas region. Working closely with Dr. Alejandro Robles Nucamendi (director at the Pediatric Hospital in Tuxtla Gutierrez) and his medical team, HCI conducted its first screening trip to Chiapas in February 2015. Touching the lives of 65 children to evaluate the most serious needs, it was determined that many of these children desperately need a surgical treatment to have a lasting normal, healthy life. In September 2015, HCI, the hospital administration and the government of Chiapas put together all the required medical and logistical infrastructure to bring a team of 45 medical professionals to conduct HCI’s first surgical mission in Tuxtla. In April 2016, the hospital in Tuxtla hosted HCI's second surgical mission, during which 20 indigent children received heart surgery.
In addition, local support from friends in Chiapas and Mexico City have been instrumental in raising funds to help cover mission expenses.
Heart Care International will work closely with the medical professionals at the hospitals in Tuxlta Gutierrez and Comitan to train in-country before, during and after each mission and offer potential scholarship opportunities for medical personnel to travel to other world class institutions to further accelerate the skill levels of all involved.
